Alice, the most socially ambiguous figure in the text, was understood as being at the bottom of the social ladder in this play. This didn’t mean, however, that she was in some way passive or apologetic in the production. She often performed with warmth, openness and positivity. She has a confidence born of her attitude to life in which she travels light and tries to make her own decisions:
